The Game of Groupism

Indeed there is no shortage of groups. Name any subject and you have a group. And why not? Humans are a scared lot and find safety in numbers. Its these numbers that create lobbies and pressure groups, its these very numbers that help to change the course of history , and help in the removal of despots. Be it at the family level or international, groups have played a vital role both in creation as well as destruction.  Political parties have been routed, countries have bowed down to the pressure of international group-ism, evil social customs have been wiped out, new laws have been made and old ones removed, movements have been started and even nature has found its support in group movements. Any issue has become an invitation to group pressure tactics   where the like-minded band together in the hope of success. This will go to any lengths and end up in fast unto death.

Thus if there is something that hurts Freedom of Expression and Speech outcome the journalistic and news world with vehement protests, if it’s something against the teachers then they go on strike together, if it’s a religious act or utterance against another then there is a big hue and cry and there are marches and even riots, and if it concerns the labor then the Unions are always waiting to join in at the drop of a hat.

The Rulers want something and the ruled want something else altogether. There is group-ism within the administrative structure and then to top it all there is the group-ism within groups. Then there are the WhatsApp groups and the Facebook groups, various intellectual elite societies and the Freemasons and professional groups. There are also groups at all status levels, and job types…’s hilarious…the list is huge …and not to forget the religious groups and the caste and nationality. In India even the people of each  states having common language and culture  band together and have their own organizations…it’s amazing how the likeminded and the people with similarities always get together and may even refuse so called outsiders to come in. Thus we have political parties…groups comprising people with common ideology and then there are groups formed by ages  and educational groups like the literary clubs and the scientific groups and then not to forget those made on the basis of  sex, caste, color, creed etc.

The way these groups form coalitions and separate is yet another amazing phenomena. There are various reasons ranging from the personal whims and fancies of the leaders of groups or those within groups, to that of a common threat. So when the minor parties are wining, the larger parties will form a coalition to register a win if they are short in the number of votes, never mind the differing ideologies and thought polarities…and once they win, again start the internal dissensions! This of course does not benefit the common man or those that are not part of any groups though the latter are few in number as these are individualistic people and are not followers by nature.

The psychology under which a group operates is quite different from say the individual, when he acts alone. The group has its own structure and system and together with rules and regulations has a hierarchy and office bearers etc. in the event it is a well-organized. Even in loosely knit groups there is a tacit understanding between the individual members and work fine as long as there is unity among them along with a certain like mindedness.

Then there are groups that are formed instantly when the issue touches the very core of human existence, and they disappear just as fast, once the issue is resolved And now there are varied groups formed on the net some of which are such that the members don’t even know each other but come together for a common cause across all borders.

Although groups are a very good support system yet they are not always the ultimate system in that many times it will fail to support you especially if one goes against the current and are a dissenter. The last of which are rarely appreciated as a matter of course anywhere. Too much adherence to groups can hinder individual progress and render you ineffective in your personal life and identity formation and make you at times faceless. One can hide very well in a group but one can hardly excel on one’s own terms especially if you are given to independent thought and assertiveness. Then there is the constant crossing over from one group to the other and change in loyalties which completely shatters the belief and trust factor. So the word commitment just doesn’t form a part of the picture.

It’s very important to choose the group one wants to join. The reason for this is that it could completely change you and your thinking process, sometimes to the point that you seem like a stranger to your near and dear ones. Joining groups to enhance status or due to societal or peer pressure or just because one feels unsafe could leave one more depressed and unstable. Many times one will end spending time on needless activities that neither enhances your knowledge or personality and one becomes just one of the sheep in the flock.

What makes one joins groups and does it really help in achieving your goals and enhancing your personality and development? Or is it just a convenient escapism from fear of being alone or responsibility and accountability? Has the individual become ineffective? The groups seem to be getting larger and larger and everything is banding together…soon there will only be group thought and group activity and group wars and competitions and perhaps all the leaders will also form a group to control the rest of humanity…a small group controlling all the other groups! The individual thought, originality and creativity may well vanish in this Game of Groupism, making everything common.

Perhaps entire humanity will only unite in the scenario of a threat to the planet from outer space. Until then we will remain divided in groups.

Let’s step back and take a look at the thousands of years that have gone by…yes I am talking of all the species that lived on this earth including man ….it will include both flora and fauna.  From the single cell to humans, each species has a story to tell. And of those that survived the various shocks and trials and tribulations of this planet and the cosmic events have a story to tell of their evolution and development as a species

Man has gone through a lot over the ages, travelled the path towards civilization from a primitive stage and did much to enhance both his surroundings and gained knowledge and built on it and is proud to proclaim the many achievements…never mind that they are still just like a drop in the ocean and has added very little value to the quality of life in real terms barring a few exceptions.

The  other species have thrived and survived and are true to their nature and perform as they were programmed to do but did evolve in ways that we are still to understand…although man has the avid need to profess that he does so even when he doesn’t.

While there is a difference among the species in the way that we are equipped  as far as skills  and the type of brain  , man was given the added benefit of a thinking brain that would help it to change  and create and evolve in ways that would be different from other species…thus we see the tremendous changes that have taken place in terms of living patterns and the creation of societies and the various goods and services and creating a business, social, political, religious , economic and psychological environment to cater to his every need and make life more comfortable and easy to live.

Then why is it that he/she still cannot overcome the need to behave like an animal?……..Is it really difficult to change ones attitude for the better…clearly when one does so there are the benefits easily visible and common sense should prevail….. Continue reading DEGENERATION OF A SPECIES

Trust Issues

It’s strange how the human mind works. Everyone wants to be trusted and believed but don’t want to trust anyone. In modern times there is little match between the spoken word and the thoughts in the mind. Sometimes they are a shade different and at other times diagrammatically opposite.

This was not the case a few years ago when people were really nice and honest and trust was a common factor. Then what exactly changed, why this distrust to the point that now dissensions have become the order of the day and that too on a whim or a speculation which although untrue just cannot be wiped out. Suspicion is rife, ruining the best of relationships and projections are being made on the flimsiest of grounds many of them make believe, only in the eyes of the seer.

Why would any individual be willing to see or imagine things that don’t exist and this despite the others honest assurances that this is not the case. I have seen the funniest of reactions where just silence on my part due to a completely unrelated cause has caused a real emotional riot in the opposite party and the amazing thing is that I was nowhere near to any of the conclusions drawn to or dreamed of. Speculations and things were ascribed to which there was no connection for the subject matter itself was not in the thought at all. Strange but real!

From my point of view it was funny and also sad, for the misery that people put themselves through unnecessary and wrong speculations in personal relationships or otherwise can really ruin a perfectly healthy environment.

So why has this lack of trust gained such a momentum in our lives that one is driven to take positions even before the event and anticipate the outcome without thought or proper study. Most of these speculations are hardly thought out properly or examined in the right context and at best are emotional reactions colored by personal experiences and the so called light ears that will listen and thus believe anything and wrong sets of beliefs.

The steady decline in the value systems has added to the woes and the word seems well on its way to be purged from life and will just be a little used word in the vocabulary list

Thus this is one of the many casualties of modernism and a need to promote, where a lot is said and very little meant. So people will say something like…..I’ll call you later and never call, or I will help you and never mean it, or say” Meet you at 10 am!” and turn up at 12 noon, or “I shall finish tomorrow!” and goes quiet on it until one has to call again……there is a constant postponement, non-deliverance and lack of commitment and promises are spread around like flowers that have an instant death when plucked from the plant. So no sooner the words are out one has to re-plan the time frame so as to reset everything at your end as protest just doesn’t bring results and only postpones things further…Really! You don’t want to protest? These are the harmless ones. The others are more dangerous involving double talk and double dealing that has now become the order of the day and harm you if you don’t spot it in time. It’s not surprising that the good and the straight forward, now found few in number have lost both heart and faith.

Herein lies the crux of the problem. People have become tired, loose in their reactions, take everything standing down, just wait for things to happen, lack energy to change things and all in all are just not interested enough to bring about the change. Whatever may be the reason for this, valid or invalid, it’s not making things any better.

All this means that a few are controlling the majority and whose fault is that? Further people are afraid to argue, keep things on the table and be forthright and demand an explanation. Silence is another culprit due to which nothing gets solved and matters are kept hanging in the air.

Trust is not going to come back on its own. One will have to change not only attitude but will have to develop the enthusiasm to put things right and not allow misunderstandings and speculations create castles of suspicion and in the air full of empty postulates with riders to a theorem that never existed.

So what is the solution? Well its really very simple…just be honest, put everything on the table and hash it out once and for all so that a final decision is reached and both parties can get on with their lives together or separate with no regrets attached and no falsities left lying around to speculate on further…clear the air so to speak. It’s time that rationality replaces emotionalism and a mature thought process is reinstated, consciously.

FREEDOM!!!!!….Everybody is fighting for it….there are wars in the name of freedom, groups mutiny against each other , there are dissensions in family and segregation’s in relationships …yes the constant pull and push factor that keep things on the boil somewhere or the other on this planet, not just among the humans , but visible in the flora and fauna and in the very deep interior of the earth itself…it’s amazing how things are always on the move and perhaps this is also the very cause for change or in some cases growth and in others complete destruction.

The seed wants to grow so it pushes through the soil, the gases want to escape as the water boils, the lava searches for weak spots in the crust to flow out, the beasts want to be free of humans, the trees want to encase and run free and envelope everything, the animals in the zoo hate being in their cages and man is always talking about wanting to be free and acting on achieving it in seemingly ridiculous ways.

One wants freedom for one’s country , we don’t want to be enslaved by another race, we want to break every rule in the name of freedom and exercising the very rights that we have given up for safety, we run away from hard work and run towards easy money and are ready to get enslaved for it, and then protest again, we fight for freedom from our teachers and parents, from rules and regulations and from oppressive societies and laws…yes we are constantly seeking to be free, to fly like a bird and breathe the fresh air and be under the sky. We want to be free of our life in whatever state that is and all efforts are being made, thankfully unsuccessful so far, to be free of death. Imagine what immortality would do to this world!

Its ironical how first we give up our freedom…the reasons of course are many, like security and safety, life support, emotional and psychological necessities, love, kindness, status power or just plain timidness….and then lo and behold the tables turn and now everyone wants to break free only to give it up again for another system or entity who is seemingly better until history repeats itself. After all the other side of hedge is always greener!

It’s amazing how history never really teaches mankind anything….so the question …Are we really free?. The answer to this question would of course be a resounding No…We are slaves to everything. Look around you. We are slaves to the very things that we have created. Time is foremost among them….we have to reach on time, deliver on time …do everything at a particular time. Soon we shall be slaves to the very machines we have created for our comfort. All this is rendering us weak and steadily lowering our abilities and capacities as a human being. We are reaching a point when we will forget how to calculate in our head, to remember our daily chores, phone numbers, people’s names, the list of things we want to buy and do. The modern generation can’t do without their gadgets, the banks stop working when the computers shut down, there is chaos at the street intersections because the signals have stopped working and there is nothing we can do because the electricity has shut down…the kitchen is closed when the food processor is down…the list is endless…we are steadily becoming powerless as we transfer everything to these extensions.

We are slaves to the materialism that we crave, and then we are bound to take care of these things that we collect, we are slaves to our environment and to our status. We become slaves to our controllers and to our governments and to our habits. We even cannot let go of our lifestyles and we are slaves to our families.

Our thoughts control us, other people’s thoughts control us so much so that we forget to live our lives and live other people’s dreams and we don’t have far to look how much we are slaves to our stomach and body. So what really makes us slavish…our wishes, desires or just a lack of will to let go. Is that all we can do…let go of one web only to enter into another. Is that what we constantly do because there are only webs and the only way that we can experience freedom is only the short span between two webs? Is this the only space where one can breathe and be free before we are caught up again/

On all this slavishness stands a huge market that benefits in millions and what does one get out of it?….Just a lot of misery, a sense of loss and a lot of time and a feeling of emptiness that no one wants to confess to as it showcases ones weakness which again one has become a slave to.

So when does one get off this bus. Or is there no such thing as freedom…just obsessions and the illusion that one is free …when exactly the opposite is true!

Actually freedom is just a state of mind, it’s the ability to hold on and let go whenever one wants without regret or emotion, to adjust and be flexible and have the ability to be elevated and basic at the same time …it is that state of balance where one is centered and always in a position that is more holistic. Where one is in the supreme position of ‘I don’t want’ the needs are few and obsessions none. There is only a single path, where there is no race …only a steady walk to the winning post that in essence is no win , just a contentment , a happiness without a cause….just another milestone and a sense of having already reached.

The earth is a wonderful example ………

…………Of how a perfect gift,

……………………To the imperfect and unworthy

………………………………….Will render it unappreciated , impaled

Everyone is running around and the oft repeated words in everybody’s mouth is “I don’t have time!” Is this really true or just an excuse or just a portrayal of modern life or yet again just a brush off or overburdened life of desires and wants.

Yes there is a general atmosphere of rush…everybody is on the run to get things done and the irony is that all this speed is not really getting anyone anywhere. It’s amazing how much movement there is how much hustle and bustle and the noise that goes with it and yet nothing gets really done to anybody’s satisfaction. Neither the quality nor the timeliness in programs are being attained, and procrastination and the other barriers related to behavior continue and there is not much sign of improvement.

Indeed there is much posing and a lot of meetings and discussions and the usual committees and memos and excel sheets and graphs and beautiful projections and still there is minuscule achievement in terms of momentum and even less achieved in real terms. Whether it is the political life or the social life or just even social work its all a lot of activity which brings little satisfaction. Yet a substantial amount of money and organization for events and the like is going down this lane. Everybody has ideas and lovely Power Points to achieve them and with the ready information on the net all have a lot to say yet nothing is really being said that nobody doesn’t know.

Then why this constant reiteration and show when much of it can be done quietly and efficiently with little or no noise and justice is done to the work in hand to achieve real results. We run after unimportant things, we buy things we don’t need and then spend time cleaning them, we have a car we don’t use much and we go to places we don’t need to, we engage in social activities that are irrelevant, and we spend a lot of time criticizing and airing opinions on other people’s lives many times unconnected, we engage in conversations on inane topics that add no value to our life and take literal and metaphorical walks to nowhere….we try to establish a status that is not required and try to keep up with the Jones’s that tires us and then try to establish truths where none exist. We get taken in by advertisements that say something and deliver something else, we try to be modern and uncomfortable when we can just be traditional and peaceful, we are careless of important things and careful of fickle matters….this is hilarious ….and as if this is not enough we speculate and then justify these speculations.

What is required of the individual is focus with due diligence on matters important and the need to pinpoint and engage with minimum effort and maximum.  One has only to look at nature and see how efficient she is. The same can be implemented in our lives very easily. What is required is the will and right desire.

There is a need to prioritize, to discard what is not needed, remove the paraphernalia, lay things bare for a change, go back to the basics, start from scratch with the minimum required, expunge all things bombastic and reduce the need to impress and increase the need to achieve the best in the shortest possible time without the adding of illusions. perhaps this will pave the way to a well pointed approach minus the coloring and the exaggerations, and with lesser digressions all will be quickly done and hence the natural  result will be …“Yes, I have time!

Actually there is always time!!!!!!!!!!.

Modern living is no easy task…it’s a real walk on the wire and while the elderly and the middle generation is somewhat bewildered at the pace and have many questions as to its value and meaning, the young have taken it in their stride or at least it would seem so …and why not …I mean take a look around you…it’s the usual rush around day in day out…a list of things to do, so many achievements and so many races to win and goals to reach and then the need to keep track of everything from health to the family , the finance and the possessions , the job and the job satisfaction , the desires and the satisfaction of them, grappling with the emotions and the, the tracking of growth and the failures and the matter of the likes and dislikes and the ego pandering ….the list goes on and on.

Whether one is alone or with a family the day begins with a to-do list and ends with another to be done for the next day. It’s a journey of life that now is no longer smooth and is full of turns and swirls and near misses and head on collisions and yet the need to carry on ,to fight it out, so that one can say that they have lived!
